NEW URBANISM TODAY

Baldwin Park (two homes above and below, by John Henry Architect)  Set in a reclaimed urban zone that was formerly a Navy Base, it has an established downtown core and 4,000 residential units on 2,500 acres.

What aspects New Urbanism should be remedied?

Prospect, Colorado (right and above)

An interesting mix of housing types, single and detached with multifamily on a low rise grid.  This project does not have enough density to warrant a 'downtown' but has open commons areas.  Strip commercial fronts the main arterial.

TND or Traditional Neighborhood Design is a term used by New Urbanists to describe mixed use neighborhoods based on historic US towns and small cities.  Ideally citizens should be able to walk to stores, schools and parks, and even public and private offices.  This is typically not the case though as the majority commute in and out of such subdivisions.  The buildings and housing mimic traditional architecture of the early 21st century.  The strict orthographic grid is favored over meandering suburban sprawl and cul de sacs. A certain monotony prevails in US New Towns: near right, Kentlands, multifamily example far right - Celebration

Celebration (above) has a downtown area with low rise offices and shops with apartments/condos above.  Sufficient density is lacking for an economically viable center core.  See critique here.

New Urbanism design/layout of detached single family homes typically hides the two and three car garages via alleys in the back which results in more interaction among neighbors there and lifeless front yards and porches, so rarely used.  And duplicated infrastructure.

Most New Urbanist towns have large fields which open up space from very crowded streetscapes.  The idea is to give the extra yards typical in the suburban house over to common use.
